Sprung a Leak?

Has your gut sprung a leak, otherwise known as “Leaky gut syndrome”?

In short, this means you’ve got holes in your gut, specifically the small intestines. Medically, it is known as increased intestinal permeability. No matter what, this is not a good thing because the digestive tract lining that protects our body from unwanted particles, food, and other toxic substances are leaking into our body cavity and bloodstream via the intestines! So, rather than the food matter moving efficiently through the tract to the end of the line—the colon—for elimination, its entering the body where it doesn’t belong. This is where the trouble begins.

How did this happen?

  • Unwanted food matter, bacteria, viruses, and even toxic waste
  • Bacteria and incompletely digested proteins and fats
  • Causing infection and inflammation… more detail on pages 73-75 in Intestinal Health- A Practical Guide to Complete Abdominal Comfort

 Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Joint or body pains
  • Skin rashes
  • Fatigue
  • Cramps
  • Excess gas
  • And more listed on pages 73-75

Additionally, the membrane damage (leak) reduces nutrient absorption.  Nutritional deficiencies may become an issue.

Also, you may develop food sensitivities, which in turn may result in allergic reactions to some of the foods you eat. As the leaking continues, additional damage may occur and conditions may worsen into more serious conditions, symptoms, or disease:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Arthritis
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Asthma and more…

In conjunction with consulting your physician, lifestyle changes and self-care may be the best route to alleviate this condition. The following, found on pages 73-75 will help.

Although leaky gut syndrome remains a mystery to modern medicine, it is still highly recommended that you consult with a medical doctor. Remember: The digestive tract is our biggest immune system organ. The more efficient your digestion, the healthier your immune system.[i]

Think of it like this with the analogy: “The Cheesecloth Effect”

Cheesecloth is a woven cotton fabric with tiny holes that allow air or liquids to flow through it. Did you know that cheesecloth comes in various weaves? Using tightly woven or ultrafine cheesecloth ensures that larger particles are caught and only the essential liquids seep through. In fact, it can be used to strain soup stocks, yogurts, tofu, whey from cheese curds, and more. 2

For your body to get the nutrients it needs without the unwanted foods, particles, or toxic substances, it is essential that your intestinal lining stays tightly woven. If it becomes loosely woven or worn, then leaky gut is likely to occur. So, avoid leaky gut by maintaining a tight weave!
